The L.A. Country regional park and open space district (RPOSD) just announced its 2026 Measure-A Park Grants including an award of $499,149 to the City of Santa Monica to design and plan the first 20 acres of the Great Park that will replace Santa Monica Airport when the airport closes after 2028.
This latest statement is important because it not only reiterates the City’s legal and political commitment to closure, but also ties that closure directly to the future of the Great Park.
Because of the incredible advocacy of many, many Great Park supporters, our City Council early Wednesday morning voted 6-1 in favor of moving forward with conceptual design for an LC-compliant Great Park!
The Santa Monica Democratic Club recommends to City Council, for the benefit of all, the creation of an inspirational LC-compliant Great Park that would not trigger a ballot measure before airport closure, with financing that prioritizes existing on-site revenue sources, and with no sale or other privatization of the land.
Aviation advocates know they can’t beat a park—but they’re certain they can torpedo any plan that adds housing or retail. If they mount another ballot drive, they’ll stoke fear and confusion, just like in 2014, to keep the airport alive. Even a small tweak to Measure LC could hand them all the ammo they need.
