The Santa Monica Democratic Club recommends to City Council, for the benefit of all, the creation of an inspirational LC-compliant Great Park that would not trigger a ballot measure before airport closure, with financing that prioritizes existing on-site revenue sources, and with no sale or other privatization of the land.
Because of the incredible advocacy of many, many Great Park supporters, our City Council early Wednesday morning voted 6-1 in favor of moving forward with conceptual design for an LC-compliant Great Park!
Our case against the Airport Housing Ballot Measure.
Although the SMDC endorsed Measure LC in 2014, it recently began a public discussion of whether the club will endorse putting housing at the current SMO site once the City closes the airport. Housing would require another local ballot measure to amend LC.
Media outlets are beginning to report on the growing momentum and enthusiasm around the planned closure of the Santa Monica Airport and the opportunity to create a Great Park.
On May 7, 2025 the City of Santa Monica Planning Commission received an update from City Staff on the SMAC Project planning process that occasioned significant public comment from both Great Park advocates and housing advocates who want to take half of the available land for 3000+ units of housing.
