November-December 2026

Draft Illustrative Master Plan and Phase 4 Survey: On Saturday, October 17, the City unveiled the Draft Illustrative Master Plan for a 192-acre, LC-compliant Great Park. Explore the plan in detail on the City’s website and take the Phase 4 survey to give the City your feedback.

Please share what you’d like to see included or protected and let the City know what you think about the proposed phasing for build-out of the park. In addition, there are boxes towards the end of the survey where you can provide a detailed reaction to the new composition of each district. The survey is open through December 6th.

October 2026

Draft Illustrative Master Plan Reveal: On Saturday, October 17, the City unveiled the Draft Illustrative Master Plan, the more detailed Phase 4 plan that builds on the Draft Framework. Community members explored it on a giant floor map at Memorial Park Gym and shared what they’d like to see included or protected. Read more about the event here.

June 2026

Planning for the Santa Monica Great Park on the 192-acre Santa Monica Airport site—which is scheduled to close on December 31, 2028—is currently in Phase 3B of the Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project.

After two years of community input from thousands of our Santa Monica residents the City of Santa Monica is advancing the design following these specific developments:

• Draft Framework Diagram: Released in early 2026, the park-only (Measure LC compliant) framework organizes the 192-acre site into eight interconnected districts. These include Immersive Nature (native habitat and biodiversity), Active Sports (organized athletics), Arts & Culture (creative expression and food), and an Urban Edge (adaptive reuse connecting to neighborhoods). Learn more about the draft framework here.

• City Council Action: The City Council voted on July 8, 2025, to move forward with a park-only plan, prioritizing open space and recreational facilities over any non-park use development. 

• Planning Funding Secured: The city was awarded a $499,149 grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District to jumpstart “day one” planning and design.

• Additional Planning Funding Secured: The city was awarded a $10,000,000 Proposition 4 (Climate Bond) grant from California State Parks to fund land restoration, rehabilitation, protection, and capital improvement of former SMO airport lands to create parks and open space.

• Feedback: The city is actively gathering community feedback and preparing for the formal environmental review process. Find out more on the Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project website.
